Stagefright vulnerability affects 95% of all Android devices - Protect yourself!

A security company standing behind the zANTI application - Zimperium, has recently discovered a new vulnerability called Stagefright. This new security flaw affects roughly 95% of all Android devices running Android 2.2 all the way to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. And how to project yourself from it?

Stagefright is an Android media library and is now widely used - even in the newest Android versions. This means your device is probably vulnerable to this security flaw.

The vulnerability can be easily exploited by sending a special MMS from the attacker's phone. This means that basically anyone who knows your telephone number can attack your phone. What's also a dangerous sign is that an attacker can send you a message while you're asleep and freely browse and run arbitrary code on your device with you having no idea about it.

The only way to potentially protect yourself from this vulnerability till the official Android update is released is to disable auto fetching for MMS. This will stop automatically downloading MMS messages as they arrive, thus an attacker would have no way of accessing your phone.

Be sure Auto-retrieve is disabled. If you're using Hangouts or stock messaging app, ensure this option is disabled on both applications.

[APK] Cortana - Your new voice assistant?

A new leak shows the brand new voice assistant - Cortana. Let's try it out, shall we?

First, make sure the unknown sources are enabled in security settings of your system.
You're now ready to install the app!

Cortana helps you find the nearest restaurants, message or call people, read the news and many more. What do you think, does it beat Siri and Google Now?

How To Install Android M's new vertical app drawer!

Android M has revelaed a fine amount of new features, including the new vercial-scrolling app drawer in Google Launcher. Some don't like it, some do - here's how to get it on your non-Nexus device as well!

The whole procedure is really easy and simple, all you got to do is to update the Google App to the newest version and of course, install the Google Launcher from Google Play Store.

  1. Download the launcher, if you haven't already. (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.launcher&hl=cs)
  2. Set as your default home, download and install the newest Google App - download (be sure to have unknown sources enabled to install apps that come outside of Google Play Store
Done? Your launcher should reset now. After that, you should see the new app drawer.

Personally, I like the change. Vertical scrolling list can quickly get you to the very bottom, a search option has also been added with a top bar showing recently launcher apps. What do you think?

How to enable MultiWindow on Android Marshmallow!

Boooom! Android M preview is out. For those that already flashed it, there might be a really really cool thing for you to try. In fact, Android M comes with multiwindow. It's experimental but seems to be working. Let's try it out!

  1. Firstly, boot into recovery. Be sure to have a custom recovery, TWRP works the best.
  2. Be sure the /system partition is mounted (Go to mount -> mount the system)
  3. Connect your device to your PC, be sure to have your device recognizable by ADB, type adb devices - your device should pop up. (Don't have ADB? Download here!)
  4. Let's access the build.prop, type the following commands in to the terminal:
adb shell
cd /system
vi build.prop

Let's change a line to enable userdebug mode. Change the line:

ro.build.type=user
to
ro.build.type=userdebug

Reboot your phone. Navigate to developer options in settings (to enable dev options, go to "about phone" and tap on "build number" several times).

Open recents and boom, you have it.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Apps - PORTED!

It's been a little while since the new Samsung flagship reveal, that also showed us the new version of Touchwiz followed by bunch of new apps, mostly with a new Material Design-ish overhaul. Guess what, they are ported!

Unfortunately, all these apps are working on Touchwiz-powered ROMs only (Samsung devices only, in other words).
Here's a little list of what apps do we have now:

  • Launcher
  • AccuWeather widget
  • Music Player
  • Keyboard
  • Smart Manager
  • S Health
  • WallpaperPicker
  • Gallery
  • Browser
  • MyFiles
  • GalaxyApps
  • Calculator
  • SnapBiz Card
  • S Translator
  • S Note
And a few more.
As you might've guessed, root is needed for installation of some of the apps.
Before replacing any APK in the /system directory, be sure to make a Nandroid backup first!

Detailed instructions followed by download links can be found in the XDA index:
No TouchWiz? Don't worry, at least you can get the wallpapers, huh?

[PORTED] LG G4 Apps now available for LG G3!

The newly release LG's flagship, the G4, hasn't even shown up to the public and boom, already got a few apps ported for its older brother, G3. The camera, gallery, contacts, launcher, calendar, voice recorder, alarm clock and some more are all available for installing on your G3!

Since the system dumb has been pushed, the LastStandingDroid@XDA decided to port a few apps for the older generation, the G3.
In the result he ported a fine amount of apps, including the well-known and brand new camera, known especially for its manual mode, that is partially working on the G3, and shooting pictures in RAW format.

apps

Here's a screenshot (credit goes to LastStandingDroid) of the new Launcher (which hasn't changed much) and the new Music app.

But the biggest tease would probably be the new camera, as it's driven a lot of attention lately.
This is a quick video showing the G4 camera running on G3. Alrough I got it working on my G3, I've experienced some FCs and there are definitely some problems.

But for those who can't wait, go ahead! Your device has to be rooted. The apps are made for Lollipop versions.

Firstly, download the ZIP. Extract it on your PC (or directly on your Android device), you should get an APK file along with a "lib" folder.

Navigate to /system/priv-app (or something like, don't quite remember the exact name), open the LGCamera folder (again, something like that :p) and backup the files there (you can backup the camera easily by changing the type from .APK to .BAK

Now simply put the new camera APK to the folder and change the permissions to rw-r-r.
Next, the folder part. Do the same thing with the folder, delete all the files except libDNVBeautyFace_JNI.so, keep this one. Then move all the files from the new folder and finally change the permissions of the folder, if needed (to rwxr-xr-x).

You should get the similar look to this (just with another Camera icon, since this is the old version).

Done? Reboot! Have fun.

Though this is quite a problematic app, there are some that work seamlessly.
  • LgMusic
  • LGIMe
  • LGFileManager
  • LGHome
  • LGMusicWidget
These should be working just fine and you shouldn't have or find any bugs.

Unresponsive touchscreen FIX for OnePlus One!

Several OnePlus One users have reported this rather annoying glitch when screen becomes unresponsive after a while. Everything seems to be working fine exepct the touchscreen, which stays unresponsive and the only way to fix this is to reboot the device. If you're experiencing such issues, here's a fix for you!

The solution is only temporary and users will probably have to wait for another software update fixing this issue but it seems to be working just fine.

The key to fix this is executing the following command into the terminal:
cat /sys/class/input/input0/baseline_test

To make this automated, you can use Tasker and create this specific task for command execution every time the screen turns ON.

Open Tasker, add a new profile, navigate to state -> display -> display state, choose ON, then create a new task.

Add an action code -> run shell and input the command cat /sys/class/input/input0/baseline_test which will be executed when the screen turns ON. Make sure root option is ticked and profile with the task is activated. You're good to go!

You might want to check the quick video by +Greg Ives if you're unsure about the guide.
https://plus.google.com/+GregIvesgrives/posts/g1hWuhdEyNx

Don't have Tasker? You might consider buying it! Tasker adds automatic tasks (that you create), events, triggers, whatever you don't want to do manually anymore, Tasker will do for you!

Download Tasker on Google Play

Reverse Engineering - How Android apps get hacked?

Reverse engineering is the process of "disassembling" a software followed by certain edits and moficiation that aims to recover what's behind the interface and a fully functional app. People who do this process, however, are planning to change the software's source code and exploit the app. Software cracks, keyloggers, those all are products of revers eengineering. As you might guess, reverse engineering can be quite dangerous for us - the users.)

Security is obviously the number one priority. Although we are all trying to protect our personal data as much as possible, it's still not effective enough.

Here's a little info from Arxan Technologies showing us that 70% of Apple apps have been in some way hacked and 95% of apps have been hacked on Android.
The question stays, is really hacking & modifying (or injecting a malicious code) an app that easy?
Let's have a look.

Here's another quick video showing the decompilation of an application using the dex2jar and JD-GUI which shows the source code of the decompiled app.

You can use the same thing using Show Java on Android, download on Google Play

The code gets changed, app compiled and released to the public. You can't spot the difference as the app is behaving normally but your personal data may get stolen.

These threads may be everywhere, for example if you like to download paid apps for free on the web (APK file), these also may be modified.

Android WiFi Hacking - How an MITM attack works?

zANTI, Dsploit, Csploit, Faceniff and many, many more similar hacking apps are using a specific kind of attack called MITM - the Man In The Middle attack. What exactly does this attack do and is there any way to protect yourself from it? Read on!

Man In The Middle aims to control a victim by becoming the "man in the middle". Let's make an example.

We got person A and person B. Let's name them Rami and Jovie. They're friends and just chatting through an unencrypted connection (http). Alice wants to hang out, says:

 - Sup Jov, gimme your public key, I want to chat!

Rami is requesting a Public key (known as asymmetric cryptography - used to encrypt data and verify them as a digital signature)

Rami and Jovie don't know one thing. There's an evil person Miro intercepting everything they say.
What happens here is that the sent message goes first to Miro and then gets sent to Jovie. He doesn't spot anything, the message is the same, nothing's really suspicious at the moment.
Jovie responds:

- Yo Ramy, let's chat. Here's my key: materialFTW123

Miro now knows the Jovie's public key but instead of sending this key directly to Rami, he sends his own public key. Miro slightly edits the message:

- Yo Ramy, let's chat. Here's my key: motiondesignFTW123

Now they can encrypt the whole conversation with their private encrypt alghoritm. However, they don't know there's someone who's edited it so he can view and control the whole conversation between these two guys.

- [encrypted with Miro's key] Let's hang out, bring some booze lol

Miro then encrypts it to Jovie's original key (materialFTW123) so he doesn't spot a thing. Then he resends it to Jovie and the conversation goes on.

..

This way the attacker can take control over a conversation and not only he can intercept it but also change it. Boom, we have redirect, script injection, replace images and many more features.

Here's a screen from MITM section in cSploit app. There are several MITM features starting from innocent "simple sniff" that sniffs through the traffic and monitors up/down, and password sniffer, that inputs passwords from the victims.

Now, is there any way to protect from these attacks? Yup, and it's not difficult at all.

Firstly, be sure to be on HTTPS. You can always check it in he URL bar. There's a feature SSLStrip that prevents from connecting to HTTPS but it cannot redirect you to HTTP while on HTTPS. So if you're on HTTPS, you're good to go.

Use WiFi Protector. WiFi protector is a handy app for your Android device that monitors the net and alarms you if there's an intruder (also shows his MAC/IP adress and can even protect you from the atttack if you're rooted). Download

Try not to connect to public networks - they're the biggest threat. But fortunately these attacks are not that often and you shouldn't really catch a hacker if you're mostly on private WiFis.

MonsterUI - And Xposed Module that will add Lollipop look to your older Android!

Since the Android Lollipop release, many legacy device owners are now "jelly" about the new Material Design look that's been spreading like a disease these days. If you're one of them, don't worry, there's still hope! It's called MonsterUI.

MonsterUI uses the well-known Xposed Framework, so it's really easy to use it.

For those that don't know what Xposed is, take a look here.
To enable MonsterUI, simply install the app, enable the Xposed module and reboot.
Enjoy!

(Module should work on ICS,JB and KitKat).

Francisco Franco launches a new app - Servicely!

Francisco Franco, the author of amazing Franco Kernel for Nexus devices and developer of FKU app, Peek, Nexus Display Control and many more just released his new app called Servicely.

Servicely does one simple job. The app launches a service every 60 seconds and check for the apps you have in the list. If the apps are running, Servicely kills them. However, if the app runs in a foreground service, the app won't be affected.

Servicely does almost the same thing as Greenify app does, it has beautiful design and it's free.
If you ever left your phone overnight and got 50% drain because of the useless apps running in the background, I ensure this won't happen anymore with Servicely.

Save battery on AMOLED screens by turning off pixels!

As you might know, super AMOLED screens are the ones that can turn OFF pixels when showing black color. This makes the color much more realistic, deeply saturated and look just better compared to other types of screen. And one thing more, it does save battery. So ..why should you keep the unecessary pixels runnin'?

There's this handy little app called Pixel OFF Save Battery AMOLED, which as you might guess turns off "unecessary" pixels on your AMOLED display. And how the app does it?

Pixel OFF Save Battery AMOLED - screenshot thumbnailPixel OFF Save Battery AMOLED - screenshot thumbnailPixel OFF Save Battery AMOLED - screenshot thumbnail

Now if you check the screenshots above, you might already guess of what's going on here. The app creates a mesh based on three different levels. Because of the high density displays nowadays, you won't probably even see the the "Mesh 1" but what it actually does, is that it creates and turns off a few pixels in a little mesh on your display.

Mesh 2 followed by Mesh 3 are a bit more aggresive, turning off a much greater area of pixels on your displays making it less comfortable to look on but the battery life will last a lot longer than ever before.

Despite the beautiful Material interface of the app, it doesn't cause any problems, bugs and it's easy to use and pretty understandable.

Note the app will only work on AMOLED-powered devices but if you still want to give it a shot (for some reason), you can download the app and see for yourself (the mesh will be visible even on non-amoled screens but I experience some weird ghost touches on my G3..huh)

How to enable LG's Quick Remote on custom AOSP-based ROMs?

Devices like LG G2 and G3 are equipped with an IR blaster which is very useful for controlling devices such TVs, projectors, radios, set-top boxes or even air conditioners. Unfortunately, the IR blaster and the QuickRemote app itself worked on the stock ROM (and custom ROMs based on this stock version, such as CandyG3) and if you wanted to flash an AOSP-based ROM, you had to live with the fact that the QuickRemote will not work. Well, not anymore.

The "guys from the XDA", exactly sefnap, RieGo and zzeneg have ported the QuickRemote app for LG G2 and G3 and made it working on all AOSP based ROMs.

The default SELinux policy for android was changed to enforcing mode in Lollipop to increase security. This restricts the functionality of some apps, so for QuickRemote to work we have to change the SELinux policy back to permissive mode until we have a better solution.

Instructions? Classic; just flasth the ZIP. Don't forget to make a backup, or at least download the uninstall version zip (that will remove the mod once flashed).

First make sure the init.d support is enabled, you can use this app.

How powerful is your charger? Test it out with Ampere!

There are many ways to charge your phone - wall charger, car charger, via USB port or power bank. But how powerful is the charger? What if your charging power doesn't even meets the values that it should have? Test your charger now with Ampere!

Ampere is an amazing and free app (with beautiful design!) that measures the charging current of the battery.

Ampere - screenshot thumbnailAmpere - screenshot thumbnailAmpere - screenshot thumbnail

It is great for measuring and checking what charger is the best option for you. If you're using some kind of un-official charger, you may not even meet the listed values and charging your phone with this may be really really slow.

Use your phone like Wii controller to play Tennis Racketeering!

Tennis Racketeering is a fun game that lets you use your Android phone as a tennis rocket and therefore control the game with. The only thing you need to install is just one app and you're ready to play!

You don't necessarily need multiple Android devices as the game can be played without a controlled but that's not really that fun.

Firstly install Tennis Racketeering app on your main device (the one with the biggest screen so all the players can see what's happening).

Then install Tennis Racketeering Racket app on your controllers. When you're done, pair your controllers with the main device. When paired, you're good to go! Choose multiplayer (or singleplayer, if you're on your own), get your rockets ready and go!

Chainfire's new app "Recently" makes Lollipop multitasking useful back again

There have been some changes in Android Lollipop that may actually be dragging Android down. With the Lollipop release, multitasking - the recents view have become overview and instead of showing all the running apps it shows pretty much everything you've ran in the past few days. And as you know Lollipop recents are kept even when phone reboots, so if you're not clearing the tabs by yourself, you probably have non-stop incoming tabs even when you don't really need them. "Recently" changes this.

As Chainfire describes the app, Recently aims to restore sanity, by limiting which apps are shown. In its most aggressive configuration, it will show you only apps that are actually running right now.

Screenshot 2015 03 10 19 50 06

As you can see on the screenshot above, you can limit the apps by age and also by maximum number of apps listed in multitasking.

In its most aggresive configuration, there will be only running apps shown in multitasking.
What Recently does, is that it hides the other tabs and just doesn't show them in the list. Recently doesn't kill the apps. The app produces no wakelocks, only runs as a BG service.
Definitely a great idea, what do you think?

Lollipop & root access needed.

How to get apps from Google Play for free using Cracked Google Play

This walkthrough is for educational purposes only. Please do not abuse this knowledge.

To get apps directly from Google Play for free, we need a few things first:

  • root access (with Busybox installed)
  • Cracked Google Play
  • root browser
  • a credit card we'll be using to purchase apps
Cracked Google Play from ChelpuS is a modyfied version of Google Play that has a few little improvements over the stock one.

With the modded Play Store, you can : Use protected apps with Google LVL (License Verification Library) without cracking them, verify license in offline mode, disable self update, and more.

One of the features we'll be exploting is that with Cracked google Play is refunds. Refunds work like this: You buy an app and you decide that you don't wont it (let's say it's crashing on your device). What you do, is that you hit refund and bom, your money is back. Of course the app you've bought gets uninstall. Well, not with cracked version.

In the modified GPlay version, the app stays on your device even when you refunded it. This way, you've just gotten it for free. However, you'll have to buy it first.

Install cracked Google Play

First you need to install this modified version. You can't install it as a classic APK file because GPlay is a system app, not a user app. So for installing you'll have to replace it in /system directory.

  1. Download root browser
  2. Download cracked Google Play apk
  3. Open the root browser, navigate to /system directory and find the Google Play app there. Note the directory may vary in different Android versions. In older ones it's probably somewhere in /system/app directory, if you're running newer versions it might be in /system/priv-app/Phonesky/Phonesky.apk - I'll be using this example.
  4. Rename the downloaded file (cracked version of Google Play) to Phonesky.apk (i.e to the same name as the stock GPlay version) and replace it in the directory. It is recommended to backup the stock GPlay version in case the cracked one doesn't work.
  5. Change the permissions of the app. Hold your finger on the APK file, hit change permissions and change it to rw-r-r-
  6. Reboot.
Now you have the cracked Google Play version installed on your device. What next?

Buy an app

Simply buy the app. Everything will go as expected, your money will be sent to the developer. We're halfway done.

Refund the app

Next step? Refund. Go to Google Play, find the app and hit refund button right next to Open button. Your money will be refunded but the app you bought stays. boom!

Well, that's pretty much it. Please note that this walkthrough is for educational purposes only - support developers by giving them money. Only this way they can produce better applications for all.

How to fix: Google Now can't be opened - Network error

Network error. Check your network connections and try again. That's what I got after opening Google Now settings. I haven't modyfied my Google account in any way, everything seemed fine. Then this. All of a sudden. Luckily I've found a fix to this!

I could not access Google Now on my account anywhere on my devices. It just didn't work. I tried to remove Google Search app data, cache, even tried to reinstall the app and whole system.

Fortunately, it's not the problem. You don't have to delete any of your data. If you're having this issue, there's an easy fix for that.

  1. Open Google Settings app from your drawer.
  2. Open the account history tab.
  3. Turn everything OFF.
  4. Wait a few minutes and then turn it back ON.
  5. That's all! Your Google Now should be setup properly now.
Screenshot 2015 03 03 17 23 47

I still don't know what caused the problem but this easily fixed it. Hope that helped you as well!

Transparent status bar on ALL apps on Android Lollipop with Lolistat!

Transparent status bar is really an amazing step pushing forward the UI limits of Android. Firstly it was released when the Android Kitkat came out and it's been a hit for many UI Android designers as the transparent (or translucent, tinted, call it how you want) status bar looks really really nice and it lets the system blend fully with the app.

Unfortunately, not many developers have decided to implement this feature on their apps, thus it's not used as much as it should be.
However, there's a way to get this tinted status bar working on all apps. But how can this be done without modyfing the system files? Xposed Framework.

Lolistat is designed to work on Android Lollipop devices only, if you have older version of Android, please kindly check THIS video to get your tinted status bar working!

You need to have Xposed Framework installed on your device. If you don't have it or don't even what this is, please follow this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3034811

  1. Download Lolistat from Xposed directory
  2. Install the app.
  3. Enable the Xposed module
  4. Reboot
  5. woho!

Before and after. This. On all apps. Enjoy.

Download HTC One M9 Wallpapers!

The HTC One M9 is not here yet but what we got from it are, as usually, wallpapers! They're really nice and have a really big resolution (2160 * 1920) which points us to the fact that the new HTC flagship will feature a qHD display.

An XDA developer made Android Wear compatible with iOS

An XDA developer most of you probably know of, MohammadAG has made Android Wear working with iOS! And how did he do that?

Mohammand used the Apple Notification Center Service, which works as a notification sender to other services and stuff. Pebble watch uses the similar API for this.

See the video demonstration:

The ANCService is at this time limited and have some restrictions. To create this notification bridge between the watch and the phone, you need to install an APK file onto your watch and that's it.

We don't know yet if Mohammad releases the code or not but he'll probably continue and maybe iOS users will have full compatibility with Android Wear before even Google releases it!

[LIST] Xposed Modules working on Android Lollipop

You've probably heard of Xposed Framework, the amazing tool that lets you completely customize your system layout and Android system in general without flashing, modyfing system values etc. Xposed Framework has finally gotten onto Android Lollipop platforms but unfortunately not all the modules are fully working now. Some of them cause severe UI lags, some just don't work at all.
Here's a quick list of working Xposed modules on Android Lollipop.

An XDA member amit3880 has set up a nice list showing whether your favourite module will or will not work on Android Lollipop.

NOT WORKING:

  • ChromePie
  • Greenify
  • Amplify
  • XPrivacy
  • XHalo Multi Window
  • Noverflow
  • KeepChat
  • AppOppsXposed
  • Statusbar download progress
  • GravityBox KK
  • Sense 6 toolbox
  • Wanam Kit
And more.

Found your favourite there? Well, you'll have to wait some time till all the bugs and issues are resolved and be sure to frequently check the list and main Xposed Framework forum on XDA.

See the full list of working/non working xposed modules on Android Lollipop:
